The Problem & Goal

In 2021, we at WITPAX connected with a market-leading perfume retailer from Saudi Arabia boasting an expansive network of over 800 retail stores.

With their significant growth and ambition, our client wanted to create an exclusive, upscale series of luxury fragrance gift sets they affectionately termed “Big Gift Boxes.”

Each of these boxes would elegantly showcase a unique perfume fragrance along with specialized accessories and tools, becoming unforgettable gifting experiences for their affluent Middle Eastern customers.

However, the client faced a substantial technical challenge with the packaging. Each “Big Gift Box” was generously sized; the smallest set measured approximately 40cm in height, length, and width.

Due to this larger dimension, our standard handmade box approach (utilizing single-layer 1250gsm substrate board) simply was not stiff enough to maintain structural integrity.

Without adequate support, these gift boxes risked appearing flimsy and losing the alluring 3-dimensional premium feel critical for consumer appeal.

“Our products needed a box that would match the prestigious and luxurious image we’re known for,” explained the client’s packaging procurement manager. “A weak or structurally unstable box simply wasn’t an option, but budget limitations meant we needed a carefully balanced solution.”

The Solution

Determined to overcome this challenge, the WITPAX team explored several solutions thoroughly.

We tested different substrate materials, including alternate substrate brands and a 2.5mm density board. Unfortunately, none of these single-material approaches could satisfactorily meet the necessary stiffness and structural support requirements.

Eventually, our dedicated packaging experts proposed a unique solution: creating a double-layered board structure. Although this approach slightly increased the package’s outer diameter, extensive testing revealed it achieved significant improvements in stiffness, stability, and luxurious appearance.

After clearly communicating the benefits and ensuring minimal impact on the intended aesthetic, the client enthusiastically approved this custom two-layer substrate solution.

Additionally, our designers incorporated premium decorative elements, including elegant gold stamping, beautifully tied silk bows, and artfully placed ribbons, further emphasizing the luxurious nature of the gift box collection.

The Results

The reception to the resulting luxury “Big Gift Box” packaging series was exceptionally positive. With the double-layered substrate providing enhanced strength and stability, the gift boxes fully represented the sophisticated, premium brand image the client envisioned.

Moreover, thoughtful details such as gold foil embellishments, upscale ribbon designs, and refined bow accents added a palpable feel of exclusivity and surprise upon unboxing.
